The Museum Villa Haiss shows an extraordinary exhibition of works by the famous internationally renowned photographer Thomas Ruff. The exhibition is a cross-section through his oeuvre, which contains diverse series, based on a conceptual manner. Main works are the night-images of exteriors and buildings, produced using the same night vision infrared technology developed for use, both military and in broadcast television, during the Gulf War. The series of Portraits is present in the exhibition as well as the series of cosmologic phenomenons. His most recent works like cassini are taken from NASA-captures of Saturn. Further on you will be expected by earlier images of buildings and machines.

Thomas Ruff was born in Zell am Harmersbach in 1958. He studied photography with Bernd and Hilla Becher at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf (Düsseldorf Art Academy) from 1977 to 1985. In 1993 he was a scholar at Villa Massimo in Rome. From 2000 to 2005 Ruff taught Photography at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. His work is inspired by photographers like Walker Evans, Eugene Atget, Karl Blossfeld, Stephen Shore and William Eggleston. He lives and works in Düsseldorf.

Cuore di cane

Artista radicale che attinge all’ambito socio-culturale della Russia sovietica e post-sovietica, Oleg Kulik si pone in antitesi all’antropocentrismo. Per un dialogo tra uomo e animale. In mostra la serie “The Russian”, tratta dalle sue disarmanti performance. A Cagliari, fino al 30 giugno.

Dissacrante provocatore al limite dell’assurdo, autore di performance estreme tra show e shock, censurato a Parigi nel 2008 e presente alla 54. Biennale all’interno del progetto Glasstress, Oleg Kulik (Kiev, 1962) approda a Cagliari per inaugurare il nuovo spazio espositivo 18diviasulis. Dieci serigrafie tratte dalle sue performance indagano il lato animale dell’umanità, nel tentativo di ricondurre l’uomo a uno stato primordiale, alla ricerca dell’istinto più viscerale scevro da valori antropologici. Influenzato dal Concettualismo moscovita, reagisce alla cultura imperialista e al conflitto fra natura e progresso nell’epoca della civilizzazione attraverso il suo alter-ego, il fedele Quilty. Il bulldog onnipresente in ogni frame della serie, dove riferimenti a icone come la piazza Rossa, il Mausoleo e la Biblioteca di Lenin fanno da sfondo a scene surreali cariche di dettagli nonché metafore. Teatrini grotteschi dell’esistenza.

Dal mosso fotografico al collage, dalle cancellazioni all’intervento pittorico, Giorgio Ciam (Pont-Saint-Martin, Aosta, 1941 – Torino, 1996) sperimenta il linguaggio fotografico all’interno d’un percorso di ricerca che ha nell’identità il proprio focus d’indagine. Ricerca ossessiva e seriale la sua, dove affiora il retrogusto performativo del corpo come territorio di relazioni complesse, di attraversamenti, di sdoppiamenti, di trasformazioni e passaggi che resistono all’occhio dell’obiettivo e allo sguardo dello spettatore. A cura di Elena Re, la mostra presenta una selezione di opere – che provengono direttamente dall’Archivio Giorgio Ciam – che ripercorre il lavoro dell’artista dagli autoritratti della metà degli anni ’70 a quelli che precedono la sua scomparsa, dove la figura si dissolve in campiture ai limiti dell’astrattismo e l’identità rinuncia a ogni definizione formale.

Lo Spazio Oberdan della Provincia di Milano ospita, dal 17 giugno al 10 luglio 2011, un suggestivo e inedito progetto espositivo dal titolo Astrattismi Paralleli, che raccoglie le fotografie di Carlo D’Orta e Danilo Susi, frutto di percorsi distinti ma convergenti di due artisti impegnati nella ricerca dell’elemento astratto visto come passaggio tra realtà e fantasia.
Come sottolinea il curatore della mostra Valerio Dehò “l’utilizzo del digitale consente di rileggere il paesaggio urbano attraverso inedite inquadrature suggerite da riflessi, dallo specchiarsi delle immagini nell'acqua e nel cristallo, proponendo storie che raccontano la città attraverso inusuali punti di vista”.

Il processo creativo di Carlo D’Orta nasce infatti all’interno della città metropolitana, usata come medium grazie ai riflessi dei grattacieli, delle vetrine o delle altre superfici specchianti. Le sue “Vibrazioni” e “Paesaggi surreali” sono realizzati in base all’assoluta fedeltà alle forme riflesse reperite nella realtà, con un’occasionale rielaborazione digitale dei colori per ottenere una fotografia “pittorica”.

Danilo Susi lega il proprio processo creativo alla natura, all’acqua, elemento primordiale tutt’uno col sacro femminino generatore di vita. Nasce così “Acquastratta”, immagini fedeli alla realtà tanto nelle forme che nei colori, senza alcun intervento post-produzione.


Come lo specchio di Alice è il media di transizione tra realtà e irrealtà, così il vetro di Carlo D’Orta e l’acqua di Danilo Susi sono l’elemento di passaggio dalla dimensione fisica a quella metafisica. La ricerca dei due artisti diventa un viaggio nei recessi dell’anima, attraverso la porta dell’astrazione, secondo la lezione di Paul Klee.
"Con la mostra Astrattismi paralleli - osserva il Vice Presidente e Assessore alla Cultura della Provincia di Milano Novo Umberto Maerna - Spazio Oberdan rinnova la sua vocazione di luogo aperto al contemporaneo, facendosi in questo modo specchio della realtà artistica del nostro tempo. Il sottile gioco tra astratto e reale, che percorre tutta l'idea espositiva, ci porta a riflettere sul concetto di verità. Una verità intuita e percepita al di là dell'apparenza e per questo più vicina all'essenza stessa delle cose."
Il percorso della mostra è arricchito dalla sezione dei lavori di Albano Paolinelli dal titolo La città parallela, che documenta la ricerca sul “nuovo paesaggio” che l’artista porta avanti da alcuni anni, mettendo in moto dispositivi pittorico-visivi di investigazione profonda che sollecitano una riflessione originale e diversa su “città” e “paesaggio”.

Paolinelli osserva da un punto di vista privilegiato il territorio che appare sfocato, e il colore, l’ombra e la luce che definiscono i volumi disegnando il paesaggio avvolto da un’aura di mistero. L’artista rappresenta scatole aperte verso l’universo, contenitori di contraddizioni, di drammi, di problemi, di scontri, di gioie e di dolori, che appaiono nella loro modellata leggerezza, trasformate da una analisi concettuale.
L’iniziativa è promossa dalla Provincia di Milano/Assessorato alla Cultura con il patrocinio di RUFA/Libera Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma e si avvale del prezioso contributo, quale main sponsor, delle Arti Grafiche Boccia.

La città, l’acqua e l’architettura sono i riferimenti visivi e concettuali della mostra Astrattismi paralleli, a cura di Valerio Dehò, allestita presso lo Spazio Oberdan di Milano. What immediately stands out with the work of Adam Fuss is that, both in terms of the chosen subject matter and in his approach to the photographic technique, he has greatly dissociated himself from conventional photography. That which Fuss produces is, in fact, still a photograph; but in order to achieve that, he did rid himself of all the finer luxuries available to users of the medium nowadays. Like a present-day alchemist, Fuss has mastered the medium's most elementary and primitive forms; he sees just as much potential for creativity in technical knowledge as in the imagination, or the visionary power of the photographer.

His subjects (silhouettes, gossamer christening gowns, rabbits, butterflies, snakes, lace, smoke, drops of water) have also been removed from their natural habitats. In the studio they become so epitomized that they assume the strength and quality of a symbol, or icon, fraught with emotion. Fuss seems, figuratively speaking, to have given wings to his images: they have a weightless and elusive appearance, as though being supernatural in origin and import.
This exhibition comprises approximately fifty images by Adam Fuss, dating from 1986 to the present, with examples from his major series as well as the premier of his most recent efforts. The selection will not only gather images that the artist believes to be among his best examples, but also together will recreate the ambiance of a location sacred to him. It has been organized by Fundación MAPFRE (Madrid) in close consultation with the artist and Cheryl Brutvan, Curator of Contemporary Art at the Norton Museum (West Palm Beach, Florida) and curator of his first survey in the United States.
Especially for his exhibition at Huis Marseille, Adam Fuss has made a selection of photographs from his own photo collection. The selection consists of historical and recent, often anonymous, but very curious images.
Adam Fuss was born in London in 1961. Because his mother was Australian, he grew up partly in London and partly in Australia, where he began his career as the studio assistant for a commercial photographer. In 1982 he moved to New York, initially getting by as a waiter for the Metropolitan Museum of Art and as a photographer of exhibitions. Along with the British photographers Susan Derges and Chris Bucklow, Adam Fuss introduced a new interest in camera-free photography and older techniques.
His work has been shown, and collected, internationally: at, among other institutions, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston and the Kunsthalle in Bielefeld. This exhibition is his first in the Netherlands.

The inherent mystery and ultimate inevitability of death makes it a staple subject of contemplation
in philosophy and in art. Risking death means both terror and excitement, and the eighteenth
century philosophers Edmund Burke and Immanuel Kant suggested that whatever is terrifying
is also sublime.

Geoffrey H. Short's series "towards another (big bang) theory" is an exploration of risk, terror, beauty and the sublime. The fuel explosion is part of the cinematic vocabulary of special effects and as such is a simulation of terror. (Notably, in these days of computer generated imagery, the best way to simulate an explosion is still with an explosion). Hiring film industry special effects technicians to create "big bangs" on the black sands of New Zealand's west coast, Short uses fossil fuel (with all its geo-political associations) mixed with gunpowder (with its own history of war, plots and dangerous entertainment) as an unpredictable, dramatic and multi-layered imaging material. This work is an interrogation of that material, and of the effects of presenting “terrible objects” in an aesthetic realm. The photographs offer both illusion and allusion, the illusion reinforced by the large scale and fine detail of the photographs, and while they document actual, staged explosion events, they allude to every explosion from the original big bang of creation to the anxiously anticipated big bang of a terrorist bomb or nuclear disaster. The near absence of a recognizable physical context emphasizes this referential quality, allowing the viewer to imagine their own context, to supply their own narrative around these isolated climactic moments.

Geoffrey H. Short lives in Auckland, New Zealand. He graduated Bachelor of Fine Arts with first class honours from the University of Auckland in 2010 and was awarded a Senior Prize in Fine Arts. His work is included in the survey exhibition and book "reGeneration² – tomorrow's photographers today" produced by the Musée d l'Elysée, Lausanne, Switzerland and touring internationally.

MIMMO JODICE -TRANSITI

Galerie Karsten Greve in Cologne devotes a solo show to the renowned Neapolitan photographer Mimmo Jodice, continuing the successful cooperation with the artist in recent years. The works in this show were recently exhibited at the Museo di Capodimonte in Naples and are closely related to the museum’s collection of paintings. Mimmo Jodice studied the wonderful old master paintings, especially the vivid portrayals of people, and photographed selected sections and portraits in black and white. He brought these studies into a fascinating dialogue with his portrait photographs taken on the streets of Naples over many years. By matching the photographs from the museum and those from “real” life in pairs, he displays a moving, almost incredible intensity of human emotions. The faces’ expressivity conflates epochs, human ages, and visual techniques.

Mimmo Jodice was born in Naples in 1934. An active photographer since the 1970’s, he has also taught photography at the Naples Academy. His work having become a beacon for contemporary Italian photography has been widely exposed through countless exhibitions and international publications.

Conceived from an idea put forth by the art collector Fabio Castelli, MIA Milan Image Art Fair is is the first art fair in Italy devoted exclusively to the world of photography and video art.
MIA distinguishes itself from any traditional Italian art fair in its innovative concept:

Each booth one artist: MIA Fair is a large exhibition comprised of solo-shows of Italian and international fine art photographers and video artists. Each exhibitor will present the works of one artist offering the viewer a comprehensive and engaging journey in the project research of each photographer;
Each artist one personal catalogue: the catalogue of the exhibition is no longer the typical summary volume with listings of the artists and the exhibitors, but each exhibitor will offer a personal brochure, published by MIA, with images and an essay on the artist on view. In this way, the visitors will be able to assemble a personalized self-made book that will expand over the course of the fair visit by collecting brochures of their favorite artists. MlA will house, in an extension of 8,000 sq. mt., more than 200 exhibitors, among art galleries, artists, photo labs, publishing houses, foundations, archives and specialized schools. MIA Fair plans to become a catalyst and an indispensable event where all the players and actors -- artists/photographers, curators, art dealers, collectors, publishers, critics and the press -- in the world of photography can meet, discuss and exchange ideas. Still MIA Fair is not for professionals only but also for art enthusiasts and fans of photography and video.
The high quality of the fair is guaranteed by a careful selection of the exhibitors carried out by a scientific committee chaired by the creator Fabio Castelli and comprised of Gigliola Foschi, curator and journalist; Elio Grazioli, contemporary art critic and curator; Roberto Mutti, curator and photography critic; Enrica Viganò, curator, critic, photography event organizer and founder of 3/3 studio which focuses on the development of photographic projects and publications.

Να ελπισουμε οτι οι αντιστοιχοι ελληνες επιμελητες να παρουν καποια μαθηματα και απο την συγχρονη οργανωση αλλα και απο το συνολο των τοσο πολλων διαφορετικων δημιουργικων αποψεων που περιλαμβανει αυτη η εκθεση  (που επελεξε αριστα ο επιμελητης Fabio Castelli ). Μερος αυτης της συγχρονης καταγραφης δειχνει ποσο πολυ εχει προχωρησει η "διαφορετικου τυπου" δημιουργικη εκφραση στην παγκοσμια εικαστικη πραγματικοτητα και ποσο πισω συνεχιζει να παραμενει η κυριαρχη προταση των εκαστοτε ελληνων επιμελητων. Καταπληκτικη ιδεα η εκδοση του ατομικου λευκωματος του καθε δημιουργου. Και στην Ελλαδα ομως, καποιοι ελαχιστοι ετσι και αλλιως, το θεωρουμε απαραιτητο δομικο στοιχειο οποιαδηποτε εκθεσης . Μ.Κ.
